Weight Loss for Kids
The topic of weight loss for kids is becoming more and more prevalent in our society. I have some weight loss tips to help your kids get in shape with natural weight loss! Our children tend to reflect the rest of society, and that means that more of them are overweight than ever before. In many cases, this is just due to a lack of physical activity combined with improper eating habits. It really isn’t surprising that weight loss for kids is such a common topic. Most of us would love to sit around eating junk food and watching television all day, but as adults, most of us understand the consequences and choose to take care of our bodies. Children don’t think about heart attacks, diabetes, shortened life-span or the other consequences of these unhealthy practices. They just do what feels good, if we let them.
Weight loss for kids becomes necessary often times because we love our children and want them to be happy. If you love your children and they really, really want some French fries, why would you deny them? Your son or daughter just wants a cookie, what’s wrong with that? The problem with that is that most children don’t restrain themselves in the interest of what is best for them. That is the job of the parent, and many of us are now realizing that we have let things get a little out of hand. It’s okay though, we can fix it without making the process too painful by using some natural weight loss methods.
The best weight loss for kids program is a little different than for adults. Children are still growing, and should not be subjected to ultra-strict diet and exercise programs. If your child is extremely obese, you should check with your doctor and devise a plan of attack that is suitable for your child’s situation. For everyone else, I have some great weight loss tips for kids!
I have a son who is a very picky eater. It isn’t as simple as saying that he only likes junk food, because there are countless goodies that he won’t touch. He doesn’t eat chocolate or pizza! Many of you probably have children who don’t want to eat a variety of good healthy foods either. What can we do to encourage natural weight loss for kids without making their (and our) lives miserable in the process?
The two main components of weight loss for kids, or anyone else for that matter, are diet and exercise. Diet is what we eat, plain and simple. Exercise is just moving our bodies. It can be anything from walking, to yard work, to playing at the park. The best weight loss programs make the process easy and fun. I will explain how to make these two natural weight loss principles as painless as possible for you and your child.
When talking about weight loss for kids, we are really talking about fat loss. We want them to get rid of the extra fat they are carrying, and get in shape so that they will be happy and healthy. Let’s deal with the diet issue first. The first weight loss tip is to encourage your child to drink water, and lots of it.
I do caution you about having them drink too much before bed, however, or we might have another problem. Instead of your child drinking pop, juice, or milk all the time, have them drink water. I am not suggesting that children should not drink milk, just that they should not drink a lot of milk if they need to lose weight. That change alone can make a big difference. The calories that some children drink each day, is in excess of the total calories they should be taking in, including food! You should not need to count calories either. I want this to be an easy plan to follow.
Another weight loss tip is to limit snacks. You don’t need to eliminate them right now, and maybe not at all, but limit them to no more than one between breakfast and lunch, and another between lunch and dinner. If you are going to have a snack after dinner, make sure that you don’t do it more than twice a week. The second part of this is to substitute healthy snacks for junk food snacks. Instead of Cheetos, try popcorn. You can use light butter, but no more. Instead of candy, substitute fruit. It’s sweet, and good for you also. Granted, these changes may not be welcome by your child, but with some firm consistency, they will accept them, and get used to them. If you truly want to achieve weight loss for your kids, you will need to do this.
I won’t spend a whole lot of time on meal planning, because this is not meant to be a total shock to the whole family, but rather some easy to use weight loss tips to achieve fat loss and improve the lives of your children. Generally speaking, try to have a balanced meal with some protein, vegetables, and grains. Do your best to limit the amount of sugar and salt to reasonable levels. Remember that children should not eat portions as large as an adult’s portion should be. Your child can still have dessert with the family, but again, don’t let them get carried away. The second major component of weight loss for kids is exercise! You don’t need to go buy your child a treadmill or home gym, but we do need to help them be active. Think about things that kids like to do. My son loves to go on bike rides. If I get on my bike and go riding with him, he gets great exercise in the fresh air, and he is having fun! If someone is having fun, they will look forward to doing it again. The key to helping your kids get in shape and exercise is to find physical activities that they like to do. Play basketball, tag, soccer, or anything else you can think of. Just be active with your child.
